R-e-
Volution
This
basically is an entire anthology of The PrestOOpniks thus far. The name derives
from the fact we started many moons ago using an old XZ Spectrum, writing a
program in BASIC that used the inbuilt tape deck to sample sounds from audio
cassettes and pitching the sample up and down to cobble a tune together. Then
onto Sharp MZ 700 series computers. By the time we hit the 3rd album we had
evolved and I played drums, keyboards and a bit of guitar on it. This amalgam of
computers and instruments lasted up to the start of Eclectic Juxtaposition when
PC's and audio were of much better quality that the Old Amiga 500 and 1200 we
were using by then. The Eclectic juxtaposition album was solely produced using
computers and was many layers deep and far more quality based than previous
albums. However, having evolved from computers to instruments, The PrestOOpniks
had done a full revolution and ended up back to computer technology to produce
albums. The anthology therefore is a evolution of our music by a revolution of
production methods and hence the name R-e-Volution.
The
R-e-Volution anthology is in production now and will consist of 3 discs. The
first being a disc which will include all The PrestOOpniks music available from
the archives, some of which has been lost forever, but 99% still remains. To
accommodate all 13 albums all the tracks are in MP3 format, but have been made
from digital remastered copies of the original tracks. All the album artwork is
present and each track has been sampled in at 44,100KHz 16 bit stereo for easy
burning to audio CD in the future. The second disc contains a fully menu'd Video
CD of old video promos made for some tracks. the quality is not high as the
tapes are old and time has made it's mark. A lot of the video material was
stolen and the '2 Gloopy Bratchnies' that contained most is now lost for good.
However some material survived in unedited parts and is being reassembled to
recreate some lost promos. the reason for the Video CD is mainly due to format
playback. VCD is MPEG1 and most people have a DVD player of some sort nowadays
which will play them. it is a fairly generic format now and needs no additional
codecs to is accessible to all, has no copy protection for home made content
either so will be fine, and also will work on either NTSC or PAL machines.
Encoding to DivX or other high quality formats is a pointless operation as the
footage has degraded over the years anyhow and doesn't allow me to menu discs as
VCD does. Maybe in the future it will be written to DVD, but for now VCD is
quick and cheap for such badly preserved material.
Hopefully it will include 'clubland' a short film I was sound designer for, and thanks goes to Matt Coombs for allowing me free reign over the sound of the film and the opportunity for working in a real film making environment. As for disc 3, this hopefully will be a credit card sized disc and will have a small program introducing the anthology and also include a few HTML pages which will have web addresses and e mail addresses on it. It will fit in any purse or wallet and allow the person, if not at home to pop into a internet cafe, slap the disc in and find addresses easily for browsing the sites or e mailing. It can also be used for backup, should you lose the addresses in your favourites folder, which I know they are and if not why not ?? ..hehe.
